Is infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, amplified by an intestinal bacteria, Prevotella? This explanation, widely disseminated on social networks, in versions sometimes flirting with conspiracy, has as far as we know no reliable scientific basis, tells the Liberation service CheckNews, during a meticulous investigation.
Why are we talking about it. In a way, this example is an enlightening case study on the construction of science, and how preliminary work must be validated by other researchers to be recognized. There are indeed, on this topic, only unpublished works, and therefore not reread by peers. Here, there are 16 pre-publications on the issue, all from Sandeep Chakraborty, a researcher in computer biology, whose ideas are obviously not followed by the community of microbiologists. Researchers specializing in this field contacted by Liberation were very critical of its hypothesis, arguing that there were other more likely explanations.
